Johnson Has Career Day as Cardinals Shutout Warriors

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Ball State baseball team returned to the field for day one of the Swig & Swine from The Shipyard Park on Friday with a game against Merrimack. Ryan Peltier launched his fourth home run of the season and Ty Johnson recorded a career high in strikeouts as the Cardinals defeated the Warriors 9-0.
Ball State improved to 2-3 on the season, while Merrimack fell to 0-1. The Cardinal pitching staff bounced back in a big way with a combined 12 strikeouts and walked just two batters.
Decker Scheffler was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the first. Blake Bevis followed with a single to right field and advanced Scheffler to third. Justin Conant drew a walk to load the bases. Adam Tellier grounded into a fielder's choice, but Scheffler was able to score from third to give BSU a 1-0 lead.
Peltier led off the top of the third with a single to right field. Dobbins moved Peltier to second on a ground out to short. After Peltier advanced to third on a wild pitch, Logan Flood produced a sac fly to center as Peltier scored.
Blake Bevis and Conant recorded back-to-back singles to start the top of the fourth for the Cardinals. Tellier doubled to left field and drove in Bevis and Conant. After a double play cleared the bases, Peltier singled to right field. Peltier then stole second. Dobbins singled to right field and drove in Peltier from second. The Cardinals lead 5-0 after four innings.
Zach Lane kept the top of the sixth going with a two-out single to left field. Peltier followed with a two-run blast to right field, his fourth home run of the year. BSU extended its lead to 7-0 after six innings in the books.
Bevis recorded his first career home run with a solo shot to right field. His home run put Ball State on top 8-0. Nick Gregory added a sac fly in the top of the eighth to give the Cardinals a 9-0 headed into the ninth.
Johnson picked up the win and improved to 1-1 on the year. He tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts and walked just two batters. He scattered four hits. Owen Quinn pitched two scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts and surrendered just one hit.
Offensively, Peltier stayed hot and went 4-for-4 on the day and drew a walk. He scored four of the five times he reached base. Dobbins added a 2-for-3 performance, while Bevis finished the day 3-for-5. Tellier led Ball State with three RBIs.
Tyghe Healy got the start for Merrimack and fell to 0-1 with the loss. He went four innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out two. Matthew Chatelle led the Warriors with a 1-for-2 day at the plate.
The Cardinals return to The Shipyard Park for day two of the Swig & Swine on Saturday. Ball State plays Rutgers at noon, followed by Bucknell at 4 p.m.
