Women’s Basketball Pulls Away in Fourth to Win at Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The Ball State women's basketball team outscored Saint Louis 20-12 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the 71-64 win on the road Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
The Cardinals improved to 6-1 on the season with the victory while the Billikens fell to 4-5 in non-conference action.
Alex Richard finished with a game-high 17 points and some key layups in the final minutes of action while Nyla Hampton chipped in seven points in the final frame to help the Cardinals seal today's victory. Hampton finished the game with 12 points while Marie Kiefer rounded out the double figure scoring for Ball State with 11. Defensively, Ally Becki pulled down eight rebounds.
Ball State struggled offensively in the first 20 minutes of action and would trail Saint Louis at intermission by a score of 37-34.
After the break, the Cardinals found themselves down by 10 (44-34) at the 8:19 mark in the third frame. A second chance layup by Annie Rauch sparked a 17-4 scoring spree that was capped off by a 3-pointer from Kiefer to give Ball State the 51-48 advantage over Saint Louis with 1:05 remaining in the third period. The Billikens were able to answer and keep the a slim one-point (52-51) edge as both teams headed into the final 10 minutes of action.
In the final frame both teams traded baskets with the last tie being 56-56 at the 7:50 mark. A layup by Estel Puiggros after a steal from Hampton put the Cardinals atop the Billikens for the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals made six free throws to end the game which ultimately gave BSU the victory.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its five-game road stretch when it plays at No. 12 UConn Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET in Storrs, Conn., at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
