Ball State Remains Undefeated at Home
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's basketball team continued its winning ways at Worthen Arena with a 67-58 triumph over Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (6-2) led for 38:18 and never trailed in the victory to improve to 6-0 at home. The visiting Knights (2-7) could not get closer than six points after trailing 40-28 at halftime.
Basheer Jihad (19 points and 11 rebounds) produced his second career double-double, while Jalin Anderson (16 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals) stuffed the stat sheet to lead Ball State to a win against a battle-tested Bellarmine team who had previous narrow losses at Kansas State, Louisville and West Virginia.
Ball State got out to an early 14-4 lead following a layup by Jihad, and the hosts would hold a multiple-possession lead from there on out. The edge peaked at 15 when Jihad hit a 3-pointer at the 17:08 mark of the second half to put Ball State up 45-30.
Ben Hendriks (11 points and seven rebounds) and Mickey Pearson Jr. (10 points and four rebounds) also scored in double figures for the home team, while Trent Middleton Jr. added nine points. Mason Jones tallied two points, six rebounds and four assists.
Bellarmine's Langdon Hatton tied Jihad with a game-high 19 points, and Bash Wieland went for 13 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Knights to hold off a Ball State offense that shot efficiently from the 3-point (7-17, 41.2 percent) and free throw (16-18, 88.9 percent) lines.
The two opponents from neighboring states shot almost identically from the field, as Bellarmine hit 23 of 55 shots and Ball State went 22 of 55, but the free throw and 3-point lines were the difference, as the Knights made 9 of 10 and 3 of 16, respectively. Ball State won the rebounding battle 35-32 and committed fewer turnovers (12-11) while winning the points from turnovers (15-9), second chance (13-6) and fast breaks (10-4) categories.
The next game for the Cardinals is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Detroit Mercy.
