November 24, 2023 | Women's Basketball
The Cardinals welcomed 5,442 in Worthen Arena Friday against the Fighting Irish
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season to No. 14 Notre Dame (4-1) Friday evening by a score of 90-59 in Worthen Arena.
Despite the loss, Ball State fans came to support today as the Cardinals played in front of a record-breaking crowd of 5,442 people surpassing their previous attendance record of 4,711 which was set versus Eastern Michigan on Feb. 24, 2007.
As to be expected there was some opening minute jitters as the Cardinals were placed on a big stage hosting No. 14 Notre Dame in Worthen Arena for the first time in program history.
The Fighting Irish opened the game with a 9-0 run over the Cardinals. At the seven-minute mark Madelyn Bischoff finally got Ball State on the board after draining back-to-back 3-pointers which made it a 12-6 ball game. After that, Notre Dame ended the quarter with a 14-7 scoring spree to take a commanding 26-13 advantage over Ball State.
The Cardinals came out in the second stanza scoring the first basket, but the Irish continued to play stingy defense eventually leading to Notre Dame's 26-point (48-22) halftime advantage over Ball State.
Notre Dame expanded their defense and continued its hot shooting hand in the second half. Ball State struggled to put points on the board to catch-up with the Fighting Irish's strong shooting in the end.
All-in-all it wasn't a total loss for the Cardinals as Ball State's defense forced Notre Dame to commit a season high 29 turnovers. The Cardinals are also only the third team to hold Notre Dame to under 100 points this season.
For the game, Bischoff and Ally Becki led the Cardinals in scoring with 11 points apiece.
The Ball State women's basketball heads on the road for five-straight games beginning Sunday, Dec. 3 at Saint Louis for a 3 pm ET tipoff. The Cardinals return home after the holiday break on Dec. 30 against Oakland City at 3 pm ET.
