October 22, 2023 | Women's Golf
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Arkansas - - Sophomore Madelin Boyd fired a career-low 69 (-3) to lead a solid effort by the Ball State women's golf team on the opening day of the Diamante Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon.
Playing as the Cardinals' lone individual at the Diamante Country Club, Boyd tallied four birdies, including three straight on holes 1-3. Boyd, who was the lone BSU golfer to start on hole 10, enters the second round tied for fourth overall, three strokes back of the tournament lead.
Sophomore Jasmine Driscoll led Ball State's countable golfers, shooting 71 (-1) and is tied for 13th overall. Driscoll provided one of the round's biggest highlights on the 518-yard, par-5 11th, collecting one of just six eagles from the field of 95 golfers.
Freshman JJ Gregston and senior Kiah Parrott both finished the day at even par (72), with each also collecting four birdies. They are currently tied for 22nd.
As a team, the Cardinals once again shined on par 5s, shooting a combined -6 for a 4.70 average. The effort ties as the third best among the 17-team field.
Thanks in part to its par-5 play, Ball State is tied for seventh overall with Houston Christian at 291 (+3). The effort is only two strokes out of fourth and 10 back of tournament leader California Baptist at 281 (-7).
For Monday's second round, the Cardinals will be pared with Houston Christian and Georgia State, and once again tee off from the course's opening hole. Junior Payton Bennett will start at 9:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. CT, with the rest of the Cardinals following every eight minutes.
