Women's S&D Takes Second at Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team opened its 2023-24 campaign with a strong showing Saturday afternoon, placing second among the 10-team field at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate hosted by Purdue at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals scored 393 points over the 12 events, including three individual race wins. The host Boilermakers won the meet with 854.5 points.

Sophomore Payton Kelly led the Cardinals with two first-place finishes, one in the 50 freestyle (23.12) and one in the 100 freestyle (50.82). Kelly also opened for the 200 freestyle relay which finished second at 1:33.41. She was joined by senior Marcella Ribeiro, sophomore Haley Sakbun and junior Hannah Jones.

Laura Wright also picked up a win in the first meet of her senior season, taking home top billing in the 100 breaststroke with a final touch of 1:04.07. In addition, Wright swam the second leg of the second-place 200 medley relay (1:44.15) alongside junior Lilia Newkirk, junior Eliza Bader and freshman Natalie Marshall.Â

Freshman Alex Van Holtz and Newkirk each recorded second-place efforts in the 100 butterfly (56.87) and 100 backstroke (57.17), respectively.Â

The Ball State women's swimming and diving program returns to action next Saturday, when its heads to Buffalo for a dual meet.Â
