Men's S&D Opens Season With Victory at UIC

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Ball State men's swimming and diving team had a strong start to their 2023-24 season, defeating Mid-American Conference rival UIC by a score of 187-113 Saturday afternoon at Flames Natatorium.

The Cardinals came away with 12 victories out of 16 events contested on the day, with senior Joey Garberick and fifth-year Owen Chaye leading the way with four victories apiece; two individual and two relay.

Both helped secure wins in the 200 medley relay (1:31.68) and the 400 free relay (3:05.87). Garberick also achieved individual wins in the 100 breaststroke (55.75) and the 200 breaststroke (2:04.28), while Chaye took first place in the 50 freestyle (21.09) and 100 freestyle (46.08).Â

Freshman Malcolm Slater was also a major asset for the Cardinals, coming away with a pair of victories in the 200 butterfly (1:52.57) and the 500 freestyle (4:41.78). He also had a strong second-place finish in the 400 IM (4:09.89).Â

Other individual wins for the Cardinals included Alexander Eddy in the 1000 freestyle (9:55.10), Ethan Pheifer in the 100 backstroke (51.68), Logan Ayres in the 200 backstroke (1:54.68) and Bryce Handshoe in the 100 butterfly (50.63).Â

Men's swimming and diving team will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 21) when they head to Purdue for the Indiana Intercollegiates, which will also serve as the season-opener for the women's program..Â
