Field Hockey Falls Short In Saturday’s Matinee Against Lehigh
September 03, 2022 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - After winning their season opener last week, Ball State unfortunately suffered a 3-1 setback against Lehigh at home Saturday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Although the Cardinals (1-1) turned in a strong performance, it was not enough to fend off the Mountain Hawks (1-2) who were looking for their first victory of the season.
"I'm conflicted on how I felt at the end of the game," Ball State head field hockey coach Caitlin Walsh said. "We did not make the adjustments we needed to at quarter and half time, but I'm proud of how we came out and played Ball State field hockey the last quarter putting one in and not conceding any goals. We plan to use that energy and momentum in preparation for Villanova tomorrow."
It wasn't a total loss for the Cardinals, as Ball State put a strong defensive fight especially in the first 15 minutes of action.
Both teams went scoreless in the first period and the majority of the second frame of action as well, as a matter of fact it wasn't until the 27:50 mark that Lehigh would strike first to take a 1-0 lead over Ball State at intermission.
After that, the Mountain Hawks found the back of the cage two more times in the second half which made it a 3-0 ball game as both teams headed into the final 15 minutes of action.
Ball State played more aggressively offensively at the start of the fourth period, and it paid off as the Cardinals drew a penalty corner at around the 54-minute mark. Rachel Bohn was able to capitalize on the play and would find the back of the cage off the assist from Michaela Graney.
Unfortunately, despite Ball State's efforts the remainder of the contest, Bohn's goal would be the lone score for the Cardinals today.
The Ball State field hockey team continues action this three-day holiday weekend at home in the Briner Sports Complex Sunday against Villanova which is set to begin at noon.
