Cardinals Drop Tough One in Home Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team played its first home match of the season on Sunday as Xavier made the trip to the Briner Sports Complex. Avery Fenchel and Lexi Fraley led the Cardinals with a goal each. BSU fell to 0-2-2 overall, while XU improved to 3-0-1, with the 4-2 Musketeer win.
In the 30th minute, Delaney Caldwell put a well-placed ball into the box that found the foot of Fenchel. Fenchel ripped a shot on goal, but her shot hit the post. The rebound went right back to Fenchel who buried the shot in the back of the net for the Cardinals' first goal of the season.
Molly McLaughlin tied the game with a penalty kick in the 37th minute.
In the 58th minute, Jenna Dombrowski sent a beautiful through ball for Fraley. Fraley was taken down in the box which resulted in a penalty kick for BSU. Fraley beat the Xavier goalie to put Ball State back on top 2-1.
Emma Flick tied the match at 2-2 in the 69th minute. Regan Dancer gave the Musketeers a 3-2 lead in the 74th minute. Brooke Sroka added to the Xavier lead with a goal in the 89th minute and she was assisted by Chloe Netzel.
Bethany Moser finished the game with three saves for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 1, as Ball State takes to the road for a matchup with Purdue Fort Wayne. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
