Ball State Fights to Nil-Nil Draw at Indiana
August 25, 2022 | Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team was in action for the first time in the Hoosier State as the Cardinals traveled to Indiana on Thursday. BSU and IU fought to a nil-nil draw as the teams combined for three shots on goal.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get a shot on target. The Ball State backline was stout and blocked three Indiana shots in the first half. The Cardinals' lone shot was just wide.
In the second half, Indiana was able to get two shots on target, but Bethany Moser made two stellar diving saves. Moser has kept the opponents off the board in back-to-back matches.
In the 86th minute, Maria Broering ripped a shot outside the box and tried to beat the IU keeper that was out of position, but the Hoosier goalie was able to recover to make the stop.
Avery Fenchel and Lexi Fraley each produced two shots, while Abby Elgert added one shot.
Head Coach Josh Rife returned to his alma mater for the first time as a coach.
"One of the things we challenged our group was could we be a little tougher," said Coach Rife. "One of our core values is grit. We hadn't had as much as we needed to get results like we did today. I'm really proud of the group with their battle and their fight. It starts in training. It takes a group challenging us in training to prepare us for days like today. Proud of the group as a whole to really show up today and put in a gritty performance."
The Cardinals will be at home for the first time this season on Sunday, Aug. 28. Ball State hosts Xavier at the Briner Sports Complex with a start time of 1 p.m.
