Ball State Travels to Indiana, Hosts Xavier

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returns to the pitch for two matches this week. The Cardinals take on the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m., followed by the home opener on Sunday, Aug. 28, against the Xavier Musketeers at 1 p.m.
Bethany Moser has made 11 saves on the season, including a career-high nine saves against Kentucky in the season opener. Abby Elgert, Jordyn Jeffers, Maya Millis, and Lexy Smith have played key roles in the Cardinal defense and have blocked numerous shots, which has made things difficult for opposing squads.
The Cardinals are still looking for their first goal of the season. The BSU attack has been able to create chances but has not been able to capitalize. Lexi Fraley and Avery Fenchel pace Ball State with three shots on goal each, while Delaney Caldwell has put two shots on frame.
"The next two matches will be a good test for us," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "Indiana and Xavier are two quality programs. The group has put in the effort this week and hopefully we will continue to improve throughout the season."
Ball State enters Thursday with a 0-1-1 record, while Indiana has a 0-0-2 mark. Xavier, who is receiving votes in the coaches' poll, has a 1-0-1 record.
The Cardinals and Hoosiers will meet for the fourth time in program history on Thursday. Ball State won the first meeting, 1-0, in 2004. Indiana picked up a 2-1 win in 2007 and the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the last meeting in 2015.
IU is led by Jamie Gerstenberg, Jordyn Levy, and Arianna Rose, who were all named to the 2022 Big Ten Women's Soccer Players to Watch List. Gerstenberg was named to the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team after she tied the Indiana program record with nine shutouts in her first year in Bloomington. Gerstenberg has made 12 saves on the season and has posted two shutouts. Levy finished 2021 tied for second on the team with four goals and was third in points with 10 as she added two assists. The Hoosiers are looking for their first goal of the season.
Ball State and Xavier have an even record in eight matches as both programs are 3-3-2. Ball State is 3-0-1 in home games against the Musketeers, with a 1-1 draw in the last meeting in Muncie in 2016. Xavier has won the last two matchups. The Musketeers are led by Molly McLaughlin, who earned a spot on the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List by the United Soccer Coaches. McLaughlin is a three-time All-Big East selection. Simone Rivard-Roberts has the team's lone goal of the year, and she was assisted by Grace Blumfeldt. Maria Galley has been in goal for both contests this season and has made six saves.
