Softball Closes Season With Shutout Of Akron
May 08, 2022 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - It was a fitting end to the 2022 season for the Ball State softball team, which turned its Mid-American Conference-leading 29th double play of the year to cap a 2-0 victory over Akron Sunday afternoon at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
It was one of two double plays on the day for the Cardinals' (22-31; 15-14 MAC) defense which helped freshman pitcher Angelina Russo and junior pitcher Deborah Jones combine for the team's fifth shutout win of the season.
Â
Overall, the pitching duo limited the Zips (18-32; 13-16 MAC) to just four hits and five total baserunners over a combined 7.0 innings of work.Â
Â
Russo threw the first 5.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out three to pick up her 12th win of the season. Jones pitched the final 2.0, also allowing just two hits while striking out one to earn her first save of the year.
Â
On offense, Ball State scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the second which started with a double from senior shortstop Amaia Daniel. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mathews followed with a single through the left side to put runners on the corners, while a grounder to short from redshirt junior catcher Jazmyne Armendariz brought Daniel home.
Â
Daniel would go on to give the Cardinals an insurance run in the bottom of the third, with a two-out RBI single to drive in freshman third baseman Emma Richards. Richards singled with one out in the inning, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout by sophomore first baseman Samantha-Jo Mata.
Â
That was all the run support BSU's pitching staff would need in the shutout victory, which was caught by senior Delanie Johnson, who was the catcher for all five of BSU's shutouts this season. Johnson, who was appearing in her final game for the Cardinals, also reached base in the sixth when she was hit by a pitch.
Â
Although they were unable to suit up for the game, Ball State's other two graduating seniors, Mackenzie McCarty and Trinity Eckerty, where honored pregame when they exchanged the final lineup card of the season during the umpire meeting.
