Softball Suffers 4-2 Setback in Series Finale at Miami
May 05, 2022 | Softball
OXFORD, Ohio - - The Ball State softball team could not get past a hot Miami squad Thursday afternoon, suffering a 4-2 setback to the 2022 Mid-American Conference regular season champions at the Miami Softball Stadium.
The Cardinals (20-30; 13-13 MAC) jumped out to another early lead, and after the RedHawks (35-13-1; 23-3 MAC) tied the score in the fourth, reclaimed the lead in the fifth.
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be as Miami scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out their seventh consecutive win of the season and third come-from-behind victory in the series.
Senior left fielder Faith Hensley led the offense, scoring both runs and going 3-for-3 from the plate with a walk. She tallied a pair of singles and a double to raise her batting average back to .422 on the year.
Like yesterday's second game, Hensley turned a leadoff walk into an early run as she opened the game with a seven-pitch free pass. Back-to-back singles by junior second baseman Haley Wynn and senior shortstop Amaia Daniel followed, loading the bases. Freshman third baseman Emma Richards then made it a 1-0 game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Miami opened the inning with back-to-back singles and used some heads-up base running on a defensive misplay to even the score.
The tie was short-lived, however, as Hensley led off the top of the fifth with a single to right and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. Wynn made the RedHawks pay for the miscue with a RBI groundout to second, pushing BSU back head by one at 2-1.
Miami would not be denied the victory in its final home game of the season, however, as it tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win and improve to 17-3-1 at the Miami Softball Stadium which will be the site of next week's 2022 MAC Softball Championship.
The Cardinals, who are currently fifth in the MAC standings, still have a chance to qualify for the four-team event. Ball State will need to sweep Akron this weekend and have Miami win all three of its games at Central Michigan in order to earn the fourth seed. If any of the games are canceled due to weather, that would give CMU the final qualifying spot.
The Cardinals and Zips are currently scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a Noon game Sunday at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
