Cardinals Fall to No. 13 Ducks on Friday

EUGENE, Ore. – The Ball State baseball team made the trek to the Pacific Northwest as the No. 25 team according to Collegiate Baseball for a matchup with No. 13/21 Oregon on Friday. Trenton Quartermaine and Matthew Rivera led the team as they both went 2-for-3 in the game as the Cardinals fell to the Ducks 13-7.
With the loss, Ball State fell to 17-10 overall, while Oregon improved to 19-10.
Justin Conant extended his hitting streak to eight games and has now reached base safely in 12-consecutive games. Amir Wright's streak of 26-straight games reaching base safely came to an end Friday night.
The Ducks got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Oregon scored three runs on three hits.
In the top of the fifth, Adam Christianson drew a walk to start the frame. After Christianson advanced to second on a wild pitch, Ryan Peltier doubled to left field to score Christianson from second. Zach Cole dropped down a perfectly placed bunt to give the Cardinals runners on first and third with no outs. Conant recorded an RBI single to right center to cut the deficit to one. After a sac bunt by Zach Lane, Wright grounded out to second, but Cole was able to score on the play. Quartermaine was intentionally walked. Nick Powell put the Cardinals on top 4-3, with an RBI single up the middle. Ball State took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Oregon regained the lead on another three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. The Ducks scored three runs on three hits.
Cole notched a one-out triple in the top of the sixth to get things started for the Cardinals. Conant recorded a sac fly to right field and cut the Oregon lead to 6-5.
Quartermaine got the top of the seventh started with a one-out double down the right field line. Powell followed with a single to the shortstop. Rivera singled through the right side to load the bases with one out. Christianson grounded out to first and allowed Quartermaine to score from third. The Cardinals sent the game into the bottom of the seventh tied 6-6.
The Ducks answered with a two-run homer off the bat of Anthony Hall. Oregon took an 8-6 lead into the eighth inning. In the eighth inning, the Ducks tallied five runs on six walks and one hit. Oregon took a 13-6 lead into the ninth.
Quartermaine drew his second walk of the game to start the inning with one out. Seth Wilson came in to pinch run for Quartermaine. Decker Scheffler drew an eight-pitch walk with two outs. CJ Horn delivered an RBI single to right field to make the score 13-7. The Cardinals were able to load the bases but were unable to add any more runs.
Cole and Powell both produced a 2-for-5 game at the plate. Cole led the team with two runs scored. Conant finished the game 1-for-2 and had a team-high two RBIs.
Trennor O'Donnell got the start and went 4 1/3 innings in the no decision. He struck out five but walked four and gave up five earned runs. Ryan Brown got the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season in 2 2/3 innings in relief. Brown collected two strikeouts with four walks and gave up four earned runs. Zach Losey pitched but was unable to record an out with five walks and gave up four earned runs. Mac Ayres tossed a perfect eighth inning.
RJ Gordon threw 4 2/3 innings in the start in a no decision for Oregon. He struck out three with three walks and surrendered four earned runs. Matt Dallas picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the year. Dallas went two innings with one strikeout and gave up one earned run on three hits.
Hall and Jacob Walsh provided power for the Ducks as they each notched a home run. Gavin Grant led the squad with a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs.
Ball State and Oregon are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday from PK Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
