Ball State competes in Knoxville, Tenn.
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State track and field team is set to make the trek to Knoxville, Tenn. for the 54th Tennessee Relays, April 7-9.
"I'm excited and I think it's a good opportunity for our team to see some different competition," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "What we've talked about all year long is putting our kids in the best position to be competitive at the end of the year when we're trying to compete for Mid-American Conference championships."
This meet is no ordinary meet, however. For Wheatley, it will be the first time in his coaching career that he'll compete on the same track where he competed from 1998-2002 and was an All-SEC (800m) and All-American (4x400m relay) performer.
Wheatley was a member of the 2001 national championship team and still is a part of 4x400-meter relay school record with a time of 3:02.14.
"For me getting to go back to Knoxville and see Good Ol' Rocky Top brings back memories of my time there as an athlete. We talk about this all the time in our sport: we want to create opportunities to have good experiences. The experiences that I had when I was there, we want to continue that here with our kids. It's going to be a good competition and give us a test to see where we're really at."
The meet begins Thursday with the heptathlon (11 a.m.), hammer throw (4 p.m.) and 10,000-meter run (9:30 p.m.). The heptathlon continues and kicks off Friday's events at 11 a.m. Saturday also begins at 11 a.m. with the discus.
Following their participation this weekend, the Cardinals return home for the Ball State outdoor track and field meet Saturday, April 16 at the Briner Sports Complex.
