Both Ball State and Miami were crowned MAC regular season champions last weekend with the Cardinals winning the tiebreaker after defeating the RedHawks in the lone head-to-head meeting this year, therefore earning Ball State the No. 1 seed and the right to host next year's 2023 MAC Championship in Muncie.
Each match will consist of three doubles competitions and six singles matches. Whichever team reaches four points first will win the match and advance in the bracket. Once a team has clinched, the remaining courts will stop play.
The Cardinals enter the tournament with a 17-4 overall record and an 8-2 MAC ledger. After Ball State closed out regular season action with a 4-3 win over Eastern Michigan last Sunday, the Cardinals were able to earn back-to-back MAC regular season titles for the second time under head coach Max Norris after also claiming the crown last season.
Norris has guided the program to all four of its MAC regular season championships (2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022) and its only MAC Tournament Championship (2016), along with two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2016 and 2021).
Ball State won all its meetings this season against Miami, Toledo, and Buffalo. The last time the Cardinals won the title was in 2016 after a 4-0 win over Western Michigan at Miami University's Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. The last time Ball State hosted the tournament in 2018, Buffalo was the No. 1 seed and was crowned MAC Tournament champions.
