Ball State honors seniors, dominates home meet
MUNCIE, Ind. – Personal bests and event wins were the theme of the weekend as the Ball State track and field team hosted the We Fly Challenge at the University Track at the Briner Sports Complex. Competing in front of a home crowd, the Cardinals put on a show.
"Today was a really good showcase for where we've progressed from the start of the season to where we are now," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "It's been really exciting to see this program continue to grow. At home, you always want to be able to put the best product out on the track, and I believe we did that today. We're trending in the right direction."
Karlie Zumbro got things started Friday afternoon as Ball State's lone competitor on the day with a personal best javelin throw of 37.95 meters and an event win. The throw was nearly a full meter better than her previous best of 36.97m.
For the field events Saturday, Charity Griffith and Joan Easter finished 1-2 in the long jump with jumps of 5.76m and 5.58m, respectively. Easter's mark was her best in the outdoor season.
McKenna Cinotte finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.55m in her first time competing in the event since the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.
On the track, all five Cardinals in the 100-meter dash finished in the top 10, highlighted by Jenna Oriani, who took first with a personal best time of 11.89. Aaleiah Winford (third) and Moriah Johnson (fourth) also ran personal best times of 12.07 and 12.12, respectively. Easter finished seventh with a personal best time of 12.40.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Kennedy Batts took first with a time of 14.07, just .01 away from her personal best, followed by Griffith and Jennah Rogers.
The 200-meter dash featured a slew of runners who set personal best marks in Oriani (24.37), Jenelle Rogers (24.82), Winford (25.05), Payton Barlow (25.26), Emma Potter (25.62) and Kayla Jones (26.27). Oriani won the event, while MaQuila Norman finished second by just .21 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, the trio of Barlow, Emma Potter and Alexis Thigpen placed first, second and third, respectively. Potter ran a season-best time of 57.02.

In the 800-meter run, Jones took first with a time of 2:12.82, just 0.63 seconds away from her best mark, while Karleigh Conner took second and Sarah Greer placed fifth in season-best times of 2:13.06 and 2:21.76, respectively.
Juliana Stogsdill went wire-to-wire in the steeplechase, winning the race in a time of 11:14.17, just two seconds away from her all-time best mark.
The meet wrapped up in style with two Cardinals setting personal best marks and exciting finish in the 10,000-meter run. Jenna Schifferer took first with a time of 40:19.30, while Maddie Aul was less than half of a second behind and placed second in 40:19.78.
Prior to Saturday's races, all eight of Ball State's seniors in Maddie Aul, Payton Barlow, Kennedy Batts, Karleigh Conner, Emma Cunningham, Michelle Lehmann, MaQuila Norman and Karlie Zumbro were honored as they competed at home for the final time.
"It was exciting to see our team run for their seniors," Wheatley added. "That group has been a big part of this program getting it to where it is now, and our underclassmen want to be able to continue to that legacy of what the seniors have done. When you look at the box scores and where we did well, there were so many wins today. It was a good showing, and I'm glad we were able to do that in front of our family and friends."
The Cardinals now shift their focus to Columbus, Ohio for the Jesse Owens Classic, April 22-23.
