Ball State Women’s Basketball Adds Sydney Shafer
April 15, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State 11th-year head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee has announced the signing of Sydney Shafer (Jackson, Mich./Northwest High School) from Western Michigan.
"We have seen Sydney play for the last three seasons from the other end of the sidelines and we couldn't be more excited to finally see her in a Ball State uniform," said Sallee. "Sydney can flat out score and can do it at all 3 levels…the 3-point line, midrange jumper and at the rim. I think she will benefit from playing in our up-tempo system and with the spacing and ball movement that we will surround her with, the nets will be snapping."
Shafer is no stranger to the Mid-American Conference and Ball State as she has played three seasons for the Broncos (2019-2022). As a matter of fact, Shafer's career high came against the Cardinals her sophomore season after she turned in a 24-point performance on Jan. 30, 2021, in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Shafer played the role as a starter and sixth man coming off the bench over her tenure with Western Michigan playing in 74 games with 26 starts. Her best season was in 2020-21 where she averaged 14.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest while also staring in 17 contests. That season, Shafer also totaled 45 assists, five blocks and 24 steals along with knocking down 48 3-pointers.
A versatile player, Shafer finished her career as a Bronco with 615 total points, 194 rebounds, 105 assists and 60 steals while knocking down 99 3-pointers from behind the arc.
Prior to WMU, Shafer attended Jackson Northwest High School where she was a First team all-state honoree as a junior and senior. Shafer still holds the all-time scoring and steals record for the Mounties and is a member of their 1,000-point club.
