Softball Falls Short in Tuesday Action at IUPUI
April 12, 2022 | Softball
INDIANAPOLIS - - The Ball State softball team scored the first three runs in Tuesday's non-conference showdown against in-state foe IUPUI.
Â
Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Jaguars (9-26) responded with eight unanswered runs to earn an 8-3 victory over the Cardinals (13-22) at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
Â
After falling behind early in each of its last three games, Ball State surged ahead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Kayla Lissy started the rally by reaching base on a one-out error and then stealing second.
Â
Following a walk to redshirt freshman first baseman McKayla Timmons to give Ball State a pair of base runners, senior second baseman Amaia Daniel smashed an RBI single up the middle to drive in the game's first run. Senior catcher Delaine Johnson followed with a two-run double to right, pushing BSU ahead 3-0.
Â
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were held scoreless the rest of the way, while IUPUI scored two in the bottom of the first, three in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and one in the sixth to earn the victory.
Â
Aside from the RBI hits from Daniel and Johnson, the only other hits for the Cardinals came off the bat of sophomore Samantha-Jo Mata who went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the contest.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to conference play Friday when it opens a three-game series at Toledo with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The teams will also play a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Scott Park.
