Softball Drops Pair of Friday Games
March 04, 2022 | Softball
CARBONDALE, Ill. - - It was a rough start to spring break for the Ball State softball team which dropped a pair of games to open play in the Coach B Classic hosted by Southern Illinois.
After suffering an 8-0 (6) loss to Murray State in the tournament opener, the Cardinals (4-8) jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in its nightcap versus host SIU. However, an eight-run fifth by the Salukis (7-6) sunk Ball State's hopes of a split on the day.
In its early afternoon loss to the Racers, the Cardinals were limited to two hits, a third-inning single by junior third baseman Haley Wynn and a fourth-inning single by senior left fielder Faith Hensley.
The Cardinals did receive some early strong pitching from junior Deborah Jones, who allowed just one unearned run in her three innings of work. Unfortunately, Murray State would score two runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth to secure their second win of the season over Ball State.
After being held scoreless in the opener, the Cardinals' offense exploded for four first inning runs against tournament host SIU. Wynn opened the game with a single, while sophomore shortstop Kayla Lissy followed with an RBI double to give BSU an early 1-0 edge.
After a single from Hensley, a fielder's choice from senior designated player Delanie Johnson made it a two-run game. The Cardinals also received RBI singles from senior right fielder Trinity Eckerty and sophomore center fielder Hannah Dukeman in the frame.
After SIU cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the first, the Cardinals scored two more runs in the top of the third on another RBI single from Eckerty and an RBI groundout from redshirt junior catcher Jazmyne Armendariz.
BSU extended its lead by one more run in the top of the fourth, thanks to Hensley's team-leading fourth home run of the season which pushed the score to 7-1.
Unfortunately, the Salukis cut one run off the advantage in the bottom of the fourth, before scoring eight more in the fifth to take control of the game. SIU closed out an 11-0 run with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the game its final score of 12-7.
Jones had another solid outing in the circle, throwing the third and fourth innings, allowing just one unearned run. Freshman Angelina Russo also had a strong start, surrendering just one run in the first two frames.
The Ball State softball team will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon with a 5:45 ET / 4:45 CT first pitch versus Northern Kentucky.
