Softball Falls In Saturday Action

COLUMBIA, Mo. - - After being rained out Friday, the Ball State softball team opened play in the Mizzou Classic with a pair of losses to two of the nation's top teams Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-15) opened the day with a 13-5 (5) setback to No. 14 Northwestern, before dropping its nightcap by a score of 6-1 to Stanford which is the first team outside the top 25 in the latest USA Today / NFCA Coaches Poll.

In Saturday's opener against the Wildcats, Bal State found itself in an early 8-0 hole, as Northwestern score five in the first and three more in the second.

BSU would not be deterred, however, answering with a five-run third to pull back within three. Senior left fielder Faith Hensley opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a leadoff home run, while redshirt junior catcher Jazmyne Armendariz added a three-run blast later in the frame.

Senior second baseman Amaia Daniel also drove in a run with a bunt single. Unfortunately, the Wildcats countered with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to win the game in five innings.

In Saturday's second contest, Stanford would also get off to a strong start with a four-run first inning. While Ball State was able to score one run in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a RBI single from senior designated player Delanie Johnson.

It was the only run BSU would score in the contest, however, while the Cardinal added single runs in the fifth and sixth to give the game its final score of 6-1.

The Ball State softball team closes play in the Mizzou Classic Sunday, with an 11 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. CT rematch versus No. 14 Northwestern, as well as a 4 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. CT contest versus No. 18 Missouri.
