Softball Falls Short in Pair of Saturday Contests
February 12, 2022 | Softball
ROSEMONT, Ill. - - It was a tough Saturday for the Ball State softball team which suffered a 5-2 loss to Murray State and a 7-5 setback to Seattle in the DePaul Tournament at the Rosemont Dome.
In Saturday's opener, the Cardinals (1-3) fell behind by five, giving up two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fifth.
Ball State would try to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth, as junior third baseman Haley Wynn and senior center fielder Faith Hensley opened the inning with back-to-back hits. Wynn would score on a third straight hit from senior second baseman Amaia Daniel, while Hensley came around to score on a two-out wild pitch.
Those were the only two runs the Cardinals could muster in the game, despite out-hitting the Racers (1-2) by a 9-to-6 margin in the contest. Hensley and Daniel led the way with two hits each.
The nightcap saw the Cardinals once again fall behind early, as Seattle scored two runs in each of the first two innings to pull ahead 4-0.
Ball State's bats came to life in the top of the fourth, however, as back-to-back two-out singles from sophomore shortstop Kayla Lissy and Daniel set up a three-run home run from redshirt freshman catcher McKayla Timmons.
Unfortunately, the Redhawks (4-0) answered with three in the bottom of the frame to reclaim its four-run lead.
Timmons would pick up her fourth RBI of the contest in the top of the sixth, following a one-out single by Lissy with a two-out double to left-center.
Things also looked to get interesting in the top of the seventh, as redshirt junior catcher Jazmyne Armendariz open the inning with a solo shot to center field. However, that was the only hit BSU would get in the inning, ending the game at 7-5.
The Ball State softball team closes play in the DePaul Tournament at the Rosemont Dome Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. CT versus Western Illinois.
