Ball State caps 2022 campaign with 6k run
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Ball State cross country team wrapped up its 2022 campaign at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Friday. The Cardinals placed 22nd in the 6k race at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Ball State finished ahead of fellow Mid-American Conference foes Kent State, who finished higher than the Cardinals at the conference meet, and Akron.
"It was good to see them come back after conference and have a strong representation of where they've been throughout the year," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "We had a couple ladies run better than they did at the conference meet and continue to step up. Overall, I think the effort was in the right spot and I think people are progressing in the right direction.Â
"It was exciting to see them compete against some of the same teams that they did at the MAC meet and fare a little bit better than at the MAC meet. That showed me that they came out competitive and tried to beat individuals who were in front of them. It was exciting to see our seniors after the competition support each other like they have all year. They've really been buying into what we're trying to do here at Ball State."
Sarah Mahnensmith was once again the top finisher for the Cardinals in a time of 21:58.3, good for 82nd out of a field of 219 overall.
Vivian Van Eck crossed the line nearly 40 spots higher than last season's run at the NCAA Regionals and finished 124th in a time of 22:32.5.
Sarah Greer and Juliana Stogsdill were close behind and finished with times of 23:03.4 and 23:21.5, respectively.
Jenna Schifferer was the next Ball State runner to cross the line in a time of 23:28.3. Grace Dean ended her season with a time of 23:44.8.
Jocilyn Stackis rounded out the Cardinal contingent with a time of 24:25.1.
Ball State will now shift their focus towards the indoor track and field season, which starts in December.
"When you look back on the season, there were a bunch of moments that we as a staff are really excited about to see their growth and development," Wheatley added. "It was a good momentum builder for the indoor season that begins next month. What the cross country kids have done, they're going to be able to take with them all the success and strength in being able to be competitive and weave that in with the rest of our team."
