Field Hockey Falls to No. 18 Ohio State in Regular Season Finale
October 30, 2022 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a valiant defensive showing in the first half of play, the Ball State field hockey team was unable to slow down 18th-ranked Ohio State's high-powered attack the remainder of the contest, as the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 decision to the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon.
Ball State (7-11) was able to hold Ohio State (10-7) in check early on as senior goalie Ally Butler made some crucial saves in the opening 30 minutes of action. The hosts eventually got on the board off a penalty corner at the 19:38 mark.
The Cardinals continued their well-known stingy defense by holding the Buckeyes to just one goal prior to break.
After halftime, the advantage grew for Ohio State with back-to-back scores in the third period after Ohio State's Leanne Bough and Sarah Charley found the back of the cage to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 advantage over the Cardinals.
The matchup was more balanced in the final 15 minutes of action as Ball State held Ohio State to only one more score the remainder of the contest.
Despite the loss, Ball State's field hockey season still has life in it, as the Cardinals earned the fourth seed in the upcoming 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament which will be held in Oxford, Ohio, Nov. 5-6.
The Cardinals will be making their first appearance in the tourney since the 2019 season under first-year head coach Caitlin Walsh. Ball State is scheduled to face top-seeded and host Miami Friday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
