Field Hockey Falls to No. 18 Ohio State in Regular Season Finale
October 30, 2022 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a valiant defensive showing in the first half of play, the Ball State field hockey team was unable to slow down 18th-ranked Ohio State's high-powered attack the remainder of the contest, as the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 decision to the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon. Â
Â
Ball State (7-11) was able to hold Ohio State (10-7) in check early on as senior goalie Ally Butler made some crucial saves in the opening 30 minutes of action. The hosts eventually got on the board off a penalty corner at the 19:38 mark.
Â
The Cardinals continued their well-known stingy defense by holding the Buckeyes to just one goal prior to break.Â
Â
After halftime, the advantage grew for Ohio State with back-to-back scores in the third period after Ohio State's Leanne Bough and Sarah Charley found the back of the cage to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 advantage over the Cardinals.Â
Â
The matchup was more balanced in the final 15 minutes of action as Ball State held Ohio State to only one more score the remainder of the contest.Â
Â
Despite the loss, Ball State's field hockey season still has life in it, as the Cardinals earned the fourth seed in the upcoming 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament which will be held in Oxford, Ohio, Nov. 5-6.Â
Â
The Cardinals will be making their first appearance in the tourney since the 2019 season under first-year head coach Caitlin Walsh. Ball State is scheduled to face top-seeded and host Miami Friday at 11:30 a.m. ET.Â
