Field Hockey Falls to MAC Rival Miami on Senior Day

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team ended its 2022 Mid-American Conference regular season Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex against conference rival Miami. Unfortunately, the Cardinals would fall to the now six-time defending MAC regular season champs by a score of 7-0.
Today's contest marked the 75th meeting between the two longtime rivals. With the loss, Ball State drops to 7-10 overall and 4-3 in the MAC while Miami improves to 11-6 for the year and 6-1 in league action.
The win earned the RedHawks the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's MAC Tournament which will be held in Oxford, Ohio on Miami's campus.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals have had one of their most successful seasons in over a decade under first year head coach Caitlin Walsh, earning their way into next week's MAC Tourney for the first time since 2019 as the No. 4 seed.
Junior Hannah Johnston started in goal for Ball State, registering 12 saves while also facing eight corners. Senior Ally Butler relieved Johnson in the fourth period and collected two saves. Butler now has over 100 saves for her career.
It was a hard-fought defensive battle in the opening minutes of today's contest between the Cardinals and the RedHawks. Miami scored late in the first period to take an early 1-0 edge over Ball State. The RedHawks would strike again one more time prior to intermission.
After the half, Miami was unstoppable offensively, tacking on five more goals to secure today's victory.
The Cardinals struggled offensively with only four shots and two shots on goal.
The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up its regular season with a non-conference game at Big Ten foe Ohio State Sunday. The game is slated to begin at 1 pm ET.
