Nine Straight; Mitchem Leads Women’s Volleyball Past WMU

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Led by a season-high 18 kills from senior opposite Natalie Mitchem, the Ball State women's volleyball team picked up its ninth straight win with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20) victory over Western Michigan Saturday evening at Worthen Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 17-6 overall and more importantly to 9-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The mark ties for the top spot in the league standings with Bowling Green who the Cardinals will face Friday evening at 6 p.m. inside BGSU's Stroh Center.
Led by Mitchem's performance, it was another solid all-around match for the Ball State offense which finished with four players in double figures and a .290 (63-13-162) hitting mark. In addition to her match-high 18 kills, Mitchem hit .459 (18-1-37) and registered a dig and block assist.
Junior outside Cait Snyder continued her solid play, reaching double figures for the sixth time in the last seven matches with 12 kills. Senior middle Marie Plitt led all players with a .625 (10-0-16) hitting mark, while tying for team-high honors with a pair of blocks.
Senior outside Natalie Risi rounded out Ball State's strong attacking night with 10 kills, while collecting a season-high 22 digs for her 11th double-double of the season.
Speaking of solid backcourt play, senior libero Maggie Huber led all players with 29 digs. She also handled the bulk of WMU's serves with a .923 reception percentage as she successfully passed 36 of the 39 serves she faced, the most of any player in the match.
Sophomore setter Megan Wielonski also had a strong outing, guiding BSU to its .290 rate of success by handing out 45 assists. She also secured nine digs, four kills, two block assists and an ace.
Overall, the Cardinals limited the Broncos (13-10; 5-6 MAC) to a .231 (54-18-156) attacking mark, with Abi Wilcoxson and Maggie King tying for team-high honors with 14 kills. Andelyn Simkins added a team-high 24 digs.
