Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking Double OT Loss at App State

BOONE, N.C. - The Ball State field hockey team (7-8, 4-2 MAC) suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss in Mid-American Conference action at App State (10-5, 4-2 MAC) Friday night at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field.
The game was a defensive thriller as both teams held each other scoreless the entire 60 minutes of regulation.
With no score, the game was sent into double overtime.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Hannah Johnston had seven saves. App State's Anna Smarrelli scored the winning goal off the assist from Friederike Stegen to give the Mountaineers the victory.
The Cardinals were outshot 20-4. Freshman standout Fleur Knopert led Ball State offensively with two shots and one shot on goal.
Defensively, junior Goalkeeper Hannah Johnston collected seven saves in tonight's game and now has 81 saves for the season. Johnston also faced nine corners.
The Ball State field hockey team continues its four-game road swing when it travels to Davidson Sunday. The game is slated to start a noon.
