
Swimming & Diving Opens 2022-23 Campaign This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State swimming & diving fans will get their first opportunity to see the Cardinals in action this season on Friday, when the program hosts its annual Cardinal vs. White Intrasquad Meet at 6 p.m. inside the Lewellen Aquatic Center.

It will be one of five opportunities to see the Cardinals in action at home this season, with BSU also hosts the following meets:
Friday, Oct. 28 vs. Eastern Illinois – 6 p.m. (Co-Ed)
Saturday, Nov. 5 vs. Akron – Noon (Women)
Saturday, Jan. 21 vs. Miami – Noon (Co-Ed)
Saturday, Jan. 28 vs. Bellarmine – Noon (Co-Ed)

However, Friday's meet is not the only one on the docket this weekend, as both the men and women open the 2022-23 competitive season Saturday at the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue.

The teams will compete in 12 total events at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center, with action in the pool beginning at Noon. Diving will begin approximately 20 minutes following the opening relay.

In addition to the Cardinals and host Boilermakers, the eight-team meet will features swimmers and divers from Anderson, Bethel, Indiana Wesleyan, IUPUI, Rose-Hulman, and Wabash (Men).

- Having a hand in all five was Joey Garberick who enters his junior season for the Cardinals in 2022-23 … Garberick was a member of the record-setting 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 medley relay … He also broke the program mark in the 100 breaststroke and briefly held the 50 freestyle mark, breaking it in the consolation finals, before it was reclaimed by Owen Chaye in the championship finals.

- Owen Chaye, who enters his senior season in 2022-23, had a hand in four of the five records set last season, including breaking the program record in the 50 freestyle twice … He first broke the 27-year-old record of 20.24 set by Ben Christoffel in 1995 with a swim of 20.22 in the morning prelims … After Garberick passed him in the consolation finals with a time of 20.21, Chaye reclaimed the mark with a third-place swim of 20.11 in the championship finals.

- Overall, six different Cardinals helped set program records at the 2021-22 MAC Championships, and all six are returning for this season … Sophomore Reece Manning and senior Bryce Handshoe swam a leg for two record-setting relays, while seniors Patrick White and Jack Wolfred each swam in one.

- The Cardinals also medaled in eight total events last season, led by Joey Garberick earning his second consecutive gold medal in the 100 breaststroke … Overall, seven different Ball State student-athletes earned medals at the 2021-22 MAC Championships, with the only non-returner being diver Hunter Ongay who earned silver on the 3M board and bronze on 1M.

- Looking to lead the way on the diving boards for the men this season is now junior Isaac Hunter, who was named the 2020-21 MAC Freshman Diver of the Year … Last season, Hunter placed fourth on 1M and sixth on 3M at the MAC Championships.

- The Cardinals also return one of the league's top divers in sophomore Ashleigh Provan who tallied an NCAA Zone Diving 1m cut of 276.00 versus Ohio (Oct. 30) and a 3M cut of 293.78 at IUPUI (Jan. 20) … Unfortunately, she was unable to compete at last season's the zone meet due to injury.
