Cardinals Ground Falcons with 2-0 Victory
October 02, 2022 | Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ball State soccer team returned to the road on Sunday for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Bowling Green. The Cardinals relied on a combo of Lexi Fraley and Lexy Smith for a 2-0 victory.
The Cardinals improved to 4-3-4 on the year and 3-0-1 in MAC play, while the Falcons fell to 3-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in conference action.
"The team played great today, start to finish," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "The ladies battled hard, were smart and took their chances well in front of goal. I thought the back line and our goalkeeper limited their opportunities and made things tough on Bowling Green. I'm proud of the staff and players for continuing to put the work in every day to get better."
Abby Elgert notched the match's first shot on goal in the seventh minute, but the Falcon keeper was there to make the stop.
The first half was a defensive battle as Elgert's shot on goal was the only shot on goal for the entire first half. Ball State and Bowling Green each had four shots at the break.
In the 49th minute, Smith sent a long ball forward from the BSU defensive third into the BSU attacking third. Fraley outran four BGSU defenders and buried her first touch into the back of the net.
Maya Millis sent a well-placed ball into the box off a corner kick in the 61st minute. Smith was on the receiving end of the corner and fought through traffic for a shot that found the back of the net. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead.
Fraley scored her second goal of the season. Smith tallied her first goal of the season and added her second assist on the year. Millis collected her second assist for the 2022 campaign.
The Cardinal defense held the Falcons to just one shot on goal for the match. Bethany Moser improved to 4-3-4 and earned her third shutout on the season. Moser made one save on the lone shot on goal and moved her season total to 38.
The Cardinals make a return trip to northwest Ohio on Thursday, Oct. 6, for a match with the Toledo Rockets. Kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
