Cardinals climb up to seventh with best round of the week Tuesday
KETTERING, Ohio – In the final round of the UD Flyer Invitational Tuesday, the Ball State men's golf team shot up the leaderboard in its best round of week with a 13-over 297 to finish seventh at the par-71 NCR Country Club.
The Cardinals had to play in tough conditions during the tournament with frigid temperatures, strong wind and a delay due to a freeze warning in their three circuits.
"It was a tough two days with the cold temperatures, the wind and the course conditions," head coach Mike Fleck said. "NCR is a championship venue, and it was showing its teeth. It was a grind, that's for sure, but I'm proud of how we finished. Both Joey and Ali had strong rounds to help our team climb up the leaderboard on the final day. It was also good to get a couple of MAC wins as we close out the fall and shift our focus with our sights set on a competitive spring."
Ball State had the fifth-best round of the day and finished just five strokes from fifth and 12 strokes from third in the 13-team field. The Cardinals finished three shots ahead of MAC foe Eastern Michigan and 18 strokes above Bowling Green.
Joey Ranieri was Ball State's top finisher at 7-over (76-72-72--220), good for a tie for ninth. The senior split a pair of birdies across the front and back nine while compiling 13 pars in his final round of the week.
Ali Khan fired a 1-over 72 to finish in a tie for 16th at 10-over (78-73-72--223). After having just two birdies in his first two rounds, the sophomore racked up four on his final card, including three in a span of four holes on the front nine.
Carter Smith tied for 44th at 18-over (77-75-79--231), while Griffin Hare finished in a tie for 55th at 20-over (80-79-74--233). Together, the tandem combined for four birdies Tuesday with two on both the front and back nine.
Rounding out the lineup, Drew Todd tied for 68th at 26-over (78-81-80--239) and Colin Nasser tied for 71st at 27-over (76-85-79--240).
The Cardinals return to action in the following months after the calendar flips to 2023.
