Cardinals move up leaderboard in final round
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ball State men's golf team completed play at the Purdue Fall Invitational Tuesday. As a team, the Cardinals rose to 12th on the final day and finished at 52-over (916) at the par-72 Kampen Golf Course.
"It was kind of feast or famine this week," head coach Mike Fleck said. "We either made birdies or double or triple bogeys. We put on a bunch of blue and black boxes early and dug a hole after the first five or six holes, but I was proud of how our team played across the final parts of the tournament. While we left a few strokes out there, we competed and have something to build on as we close out the fall next week."
Joey Ranieri was Ball State's top finisher, tying for 24th at 7-over (76-72--75 223). After fending off two bogeys in his first three holes, the senior rattled off 12 pars and a birdie across his final 15 holes.
Kash Bellar tied for 45th a 13-over (78-77-74--229). The sophomore improved his card each round, capping off the three-round event with a team-best 14 pars in addition to a birdie on the par-5, 607-yard hole No. 10.
Ali Khan and Griffin Hare were the Cardinals' next finishers at 16-over (80-75-77--232) and 17-over (76-76-81--233), respectively. Khan, who tied for 53rd, had a team-best three birdies Tuesday while Hare, who tied for 57th, secured nine pars on the afternoon.
Joey Wiseman concluded the Ball State contingent in 74th at 27-over (79-82-82--243).
Over on the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in the individual tournament, Carter Smith tied for 21st at 4-over (73-75-74--222). The freshman carded five birdies, matching his total from the previous two rounds.
Drew Todd tied for 23rd at 7-over (73-77-73--233), securing a pair of birdies and an eagle, which occurred on the par-5 No. 14 hole.
Carson Orr tied for 34th at 14-over (80-75-75--230). The redshirt sophomore had 11 pars and two birdies in his final circuit.
Tennessee won the event at 8-under (856), followed by LSU (868) and Purdue (875).
Ball State completes the fall portion of its schedule next week at the UD Flyer Invitational, Oct. 17-18.
