Women’s Swimming Chalks Up 10 Event Wins; Tops Bellarmine 157-99

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - In its next-to-last team tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Ball State women's swimming program picked up 10 event wins in a dominating 157-99 victory at Bellarmine Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals (3-3) won the meet's first four events at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, starting with a dominating swim of 3:55.63 in the 400 medley relay by junior Shelby Crist, senior Alex Bader, freshman Hannah Jones and freshman Gracey Payne.
It was the first to two event wins for Payne, who would also take home top billing in the 100 freestyle in 53.56.
Another two-event winner for the Cardinals was sophomore Mary Kate Phillips who take first in the meet's two longest individual events; the 1000 freestyle (10:42.71) and the 500 freestyle (5:15.61).
Sophomore Marcella Ribeiro collected her team-leading ninth individual victory of the season in the 200 freestyle (1:54.74), topping second-place by over three seconds.
Junior Apsara Sakbun followed with her sixth individual victory of the season, touching the wall in 57.19 in the 100 backstroke.
Also picking up individual event wins for Ball State were junior Sydney Dygert in the 200 butterfly (2:09.07), junior Gracie Saulman in the 50 freestyle (24.77), sophomore Laura Wright in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.83), and freshman Abby Hartshorne in the 100 butterfly (58.10).
It will be a quick turnaround for the Ball State women's swimming & diving program, which returns to action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. inside the Lewellen Aquatic Center to take on Buffalo in its regular season finale.
The meet will serve as Senior Day for the Cardinals who will honor Alex Bader, Meri Gray, Kayce Ingram, Abbie McCarter, Alexa McDonald, Cecilia Moore, and Katie Walker prior to the start of competition.
