Field Hockey Shuts Down Saint Louis’ Offense For Shutout Victory
September 06, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - After playing back-to-back days you would have thought that the Cardinals would be tired from a long weekend road trip but that just wasn't the case on this Labor Day. The Ball State field hockey team came out ready to play on its home field at the Briner Sports Complex and earned itself a 1-0 victory against the Billikens.
It was a defensive battle today, there was no doubt about that, as the Cardinals (2-3) shoutout its first opponent of the season against Saint Louis (0-3).
Although, Ball State controlled the tempo of the ball game, neither team could get things going offensively in the first half despite the Cardinals drawing three penalty corners in the second frame of action.
After the half, it didn't take long for Ball State to score with just 1:08 shaved off the clock, sophomore Halle Baisas' pass connected with junior Angel Nkosi who took a quick shot and was able to connect. The goal was Nkosi's first of the season and fourth of her career. As a matter of fact, it was Saint Louis that the Cardinals were playing on this exact same day in 2019 at home where Nkosi registered her very first career goal as a Cardinal.
Ball State's 1-0 score line held through the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals did have some close calls as today's contest was winding down, but freshman goalie Ally Butler was able to fend off the Billiken's from scoring to end the day with three saves for her first career win at Ball State.
The Ball State field hockey team will travel to Big Ten foe Michigan for a Friday night under the lights game beginning a 7 p.m. ET at Phyllis Ocker Field.
