Cardinals Drop Hard-Fought Battle to Bulls
September 30, 2021 | Soccer
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Alex DeRuvo made a career-high eight saves, while Tatiana Mason scored the lone goal on Thursday. Ball State fell to 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while Buffalo improved to 7-2-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in MAC play, behind a 2-1 Bulls victory.
In the fifth minute, the Cardinals capitalized on a failed clear attempt by the Bulls. Jenna Dombrowski headed a pass to Mason inside the box. Mason turned to her left and blasted a shot towards the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Arianna Zumpano tied the match for the Bulls with a goal in the 21st minute and was assisted by Katherine Camper and Alya Ruken.
In the 28th minute, Buffalo put some pressure on the Cardinal defense, but Alex DeRuvo made back-to-back saves to keep the match tied.
The Bulls stayed on the attack for the remainder of the first half. DeRuvo faced three more shots the remainder of the half and stopped them all. DeRuvo finished the half one save shy of tying a season best.
Less than a minute into the second half, the Bulls were able to get a ball on frame, but DeRuvo made an outstanding save to keep the match square.
In the 55th minute, Mason notched her second shot on target, but was denied by the Buffalo goalie. Just two minutes later, Chelcy Ralph had a promising chance, but the UB keeper made the stop.
At the 63rd-minute mark, Taylor Caridi broke the tie with a goal for the Bulls. She was assisted by Camper and Ruken.
In the 79th minute, DeRuvo made her sixth save of the night and kept Buffalo from extending its lead. Four minutes later, DeRuvo faced another shot on target by the Bulls, but she was up for the challenge and made her seventh save of the contest.
At the 88th-minute mark, Grace Alsop put a shot on frame, but the Buffalo keeper made the stop.
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex on Sunday as BSU hosts the Akron Zips. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
From the Coach – Head Coach Josh Rife
"It was a tough game, Buffalo is a good team. The game definitely had some big momentum swings, and you have to capitalize when it swings your way. I thought Alex (DeRuvo) made some big saves for us today to keep it close. We now have to shift our focus onto Akron this Sunday."
