Women’s Tennis Dominates Opening Day of Bethany Moore Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - - There will be plenty for Ball State women's tennis fans too cheer for Saturday, as the championship matches of the 3rd Annual Bethany Moore Invitational will be chalk full of Cardinals after Friday's opening-round performances.
In fact, eight of the 10 singles championship slots will be held by Ball State student-athletes as the team went a combined 18-2 in singles action at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. All four doubles teams also advanced in the winner's bracket, and BSU picked up a win in exhibition, to combine for a 5-0 mark in doubles.
In the top singles bracket, juniors Jessica Braun and Amy Kaplan will square off after sweeping their opening matches. Both won their first outing in straight sets, while Braun pulled out a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 victory in her second match versus UW-Milwakee's Greta Carbone.
The No. 2 bracket championship will pit junior Emma Peeler against sophomore Mariya Polishchuk who won in straight sets in each of their first two matches.
The championship of the third singles bracket will also be an all Ball State affair, with senior Livia Lukacs taking on freshman Hannah Davies. Lukacs would sweep her first two matches of the tournament, while Davies battled past Tiffin's Alessandra Maganuco for a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-7 win in her opener, before sweeping her second.
In the fourth singles bracket, junior Emily Desai picked up a pair of straight-set wins to secure her spot in the championship where she will face Youngstown State's Jessica Stanmore. Stanmore earned the win over BSU's Elena Malykh who was forced to retire after the opening set. Malykh would win her opener, however, taking out Tiffin's Jessica Peace 6-3, 6-1.
The final singles bracket will see freshman Ella Hazelbaker take on EMU's Julia Piatek. Hazelbaker swept her opening-round contest, while winning a third-set tiebreaker in her second. After sweeping her opening-round match, sophomore Isabelle Behrman gave Piatek all she could handle in the second round but came up a few points short in the 10-7 third-set tiebreaker.
In doubles action, Peeler and Kaplan teamed up for an 8-3 win in their opening match of the top bracket, while Davies and Lukacs won their opener 8-1.
In the second bracket, it was an 8-1 win for Braun and Desai and an 8-4 victory for Polishchuk and Malykh which allowed each team to advance.
In exhibition doubles, Hazelbaker and Behrman earned an 8-1 win.
