Agustsdottir & Puiggros Spend Summer Playing International Basketball
August 12, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir (Keflavik, Iceland) and junior guard Estel Puiggros (Manresa, Spain/Segle XXI) of the Ball State women's basketball team decided to put some extra work in this summer on the court by playing basketball for their respective countries. Â
Agustsdottir said her club team had contacted her from back home in Iceland after the Cardinals had wrapped up their season and wanted to know if she could join the team when she returned home. So, Agustsdottir did just that and was able to play three games with her old teammates. Â
The experience playing for the team of Keflavik again was fun but different because she had to adjust her game after playing in the states for the last three years. Â
Prior to her arrival at Ball State, Agustsdottir was the team's Most Valuable Player in 2017. She was also a member of the Dominos League All-Star Team while also receiving the Dominos League Sportsmanship Award. Agustsdottir was tabbed the 2017 Sportswoman of the Year Recipient while helping Keflavik win the 2017 Iceland Club Championship. Â
Puiggros in similar fashion returned home to Spain after the conclusion of the season. She was one of 12 players that were selected to go to Madrid and play for Spain's national team where they competed in the European championship against Serbia, Israel, Ireland, Czech Republic, and Hungary. Â
Puiggros explained that playing European basketball is different than playing collegiate basketball in the states because Ball State 10th year head coach Brady Sallee emphasizes to take charges on the court but Puiggros said if you take a charge in the European basketball system you get called for a technical foul.  Â
In Spain before attending Ball State, Puiggros played for Club Segel XXI where she averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She was chosen to play at the FIBA U17 Women's World Cup, scored a tournament high 14 points against Japan and was ranked a four-star recruit prior to her freshman season with the Cardinals.Â
All-in-all both Agustsdottir and Puiggros had fun playing basketball for Iceland and Spain, respectively and they are looking forward to returning to the court this fall for the Cardinals.Â
