Football Places Two on Prestigious Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - - Two members of the Ball State football team were placed on the prestigious Wuerffel Trophy watch list for the 2021 season.

Fifth-year senior safety Bryce Cosby and redshirt senior inside linebacker Brandon Martin were two on 93 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to be named to the watch list for "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service".

Cosby, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, makes his first appearance on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list after earning First Team All-MAC honors in 2020. He has started 43 career games for Ball State entering the season, including each of the last 31, and has 282 career tackles and eight career interceptions. Cosby was also named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award watch list earlier this week.

Martin, who hails from Indianapolis, Indiana, was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list for the second straight season. Named the Mid-American Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, Martin led the MAC with 90 total tackles last season and ranked eighth nationally with 11.3 tackles per game. He was also named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list earlier this week.

Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their impact, and inspire greater service in the world. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the first major award honoring the character of service to others.

The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made on December 9 and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur in February 2022Â in Fort Walton Beach.

The Wuerffel Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast more than 800 recipients, dating back to 1935.

The 2021 Ball State football season is set to begin Thursday, Sept. 2, with a 7 p.m. kickoff versus Western Illinois at Scheumann Stadium. Season tickets, six-ticket flex plans, and single-game tickets are available now.
