Cosby, a second team honoree, becomes the 22nd CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in program history among 13 student-athletes
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State football senior safety Bryce Cosby has been named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Football Second Team.
Cosby is one of only three players from the Mid-American Conference to be recognized on the CoSIDA Academic All-America first or second team. Mike Caliendo of Western Michigan and Mike Van Hoeven of Eastern Michigan are the other two.
In addition, Cosby becomes the 22nd CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in program history among 13 student-athletes. The last Ball State football player to earn Academic All-America honors was Zane Fakes on the first team in 2013.
Cosby, who graduated from Ball State in the spring of 2021 with a 3.44 grade point average as a telecommunications major, helped the Cardinals to one of their most historic seasons in program history in 2020. The First Team All-MAC selection started all eight games at the safety position for the team that captured the program's first MAC title since 1996 and won the first bowl game in school history.
Cosby tied for the team lead with two interceptions after picking off passes at Toledo and in the Arizona Bowl victory over No. 19 San Jose State. He had team-high nine tackles in the bowl win on his way to Defensive Player of the Game honors and a spot on the AP All-Bowl Team.
The senior from Louisville, Kentucky, ranked third on the team with 62 total tackles for the season, including a season-high 14 in the win over Northern Illinois. Cosby managed 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, in the MAC West championship-clinching victory over Western Michigan. He made nine stops the next week in the MAC Championship Game victory over No. 23 Buffalo while finishing the year with 4.5 tackles for loss.
Cosby was a member of the football program's leadership council and ranked No. 3 on the team's annual "Tough Cardinals" list.
Along with Cosby, Ball State returns 16 total "super seniors" in the fall of 2021, as well as 20 starters from the team which finished 7-1 last fall to earn a year-end ranking of No. 23 in both the AP and Amway Coaches polls.
The 2021 Ball State football season is set to begin Thursday, Sept. 2, with a 7 p.m. kickoff versus Western Illinois.
