Heptathlon, Hurdles, Sprints Highlight Day 1 Of League Meet
May 07, 2021 | Track & Field
OXFORD, Ohio - Ball State's Friday performances at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships - where the majority of Cardinals are advancing to the finals - set the stage for an exciting finish to the season. Anasja Troutman stepping up in the hurdles events and Karlie Zumbro battling for the heptathlon will keep the Cards in the hunt.Â
"We had a really good day overall and we're in a great spot," head coach Brian Etelman said. "Karlie came out and really set the tone for a great day and Anasja was probably the performer of the day for us. We have some work to do and need to bring it tomorrow, but we did a good job today."
Â
Troutman won her heat and placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles 13.93. She then also placed 5th with a qualifying time and PR of 1:01.76.Â
"It was good to see a senior step up in that spot. I'm really proud of her," Etelman said.
Zumbro finished the day 2nd in the heptathlon and posted outdoor PRs in all four events. She started the day with a PR time in the 100m hurdles at 14.42 to place third in that event. She also posted PR marks in the 200m (25.33) and the shot put (9.96m) and an outdoor PR in the high jump (1.60m).Â
Right behind Troutman in the hurdles was Kennedy Batts, who qualified for the final in 9th at 14.30, making it to the final by a hundredth of a second.Â
All four Cardinals sprinters held serve in the 100m and 200m prelims. The critical sprint performance for BSU came with an overachieving effort from Ivy McKee, who was seeded 11th coming into the 100m but placed 7th to advance to Saturday. McKee ran a wind-aided 11.74, as did Michelle Lehmann also 11.74. Bryeana Byrdsong was 5th and the top Cardinal at 11.71. MaQuila Norman was the top Card in the 200m (24.27) and placed 2nd, while Byrdsong (24.53) and Lehmann (24.77) also advanced.Â
Â
Abby Denham placed sixth in the javelin throw (42.24m) was good for three team points.
