Zumbro Wins Heptathlon Title As Cards Close MAC Outdoors
May 08, 2021 | Track & Field
OXFORD, Ohio - Through all the training, Karlie Zumbro said she'd imagined this day. She is the 2021 heptathlon conference champion.Â
"Karlie was awesome. She PR'd in all seven events. It was as perfect as could be," head coach Brian Etelman said. "It came down to the 800, the physically and mentally toughest event, and when you have a certain chore to do, that's a Karlie Zumbro situation if I've ever seen one. She did well in everything. I'm really, really proud of her."
Zumbro finished Friday's action 2nd in the heptathlon, entering the day with 3,040 points and trailing Miami's Sarah Bruns by a narrow margin. After something, it all came down to the event finale 800m run. Zumbro needed to beat Bruns by 4 seconds to claim the title, and she accomplished that with a clutch 2:13.89 run. It was 6 seconds better, enough for her to win the heptathlon with 5,196 points.
Charity Griffith put herself in contention to make the NCAAs in the high jump, placing 2nd with a PR mark of 1.75m.
"Charity's jump was so good. She was good last week at Notre Dame and needed that," Etelman said. "That was phenomenal and probably our over-performance of the weekend."
BSU's top-seeded 4x100 relay didn't finish, but the Cards got an event-best 11 team points in the 100m dash.
"The sprinters did a good job of responding. They showed a lot of resiliency," Etelman said.
Bryeana Byrdsong (4th), Michelle Lehmann (5th) and Ivy McKee (7th) rebounded after the relay to combine for 11 points in the 100m dash. MaQuila Norman held serve by placing 2nd in the 200m and Lehmann scored by placing 6th. Ball State was the only team with three runners in the 100 and 200m finals.
Anasja Troutman finished her strong meet with a 3rd place effort in the 100m hurdles. Etelman also cited Kennedy Batts for shaking an injury and having a good meet. Batts placed 4th in the 100m hurdles, right behind Troutman.
BSU tied Central Michigan for 8th in the 12-team championships event with 60 points. Kent State won the title, followed by Eastern Michigan.Â
