Central Edges Cards With Late Big Inning
May 07, 2021 | Baseball
MT. PLEASANT, Michigan - The Ball State baseball had an early lead, but a big inning late in the game lifted Central Michigan past the Cardinals 7-3 on Friday. It was the first time BSU has lost two games in a row in nearly two months.
Ball State (28-13, 19-6) held a 3-1 lead when Central Michigan's Jakob Marsee hit a 2-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th. Central Michigan (29-11, 21-4) took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the 7th that opened up a game-changing 4-run inning. BSU threatened at the end of the game, bringing the tying run to the plate before running out of outs.Â
CARD STRIKE FIRST: Noah Navarro, who is leading MAC playing in hitting during league games with a .394 average, put Ball State up early with an RBI single. After CMU tied it 1-1, a sac fly by Aaron Simpson and an RBI double by Chase Sebby gave Ball State the 3-1 lead early in the game.
DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS: Central Michigan's recipe is small ball and taking advantage of any little sliver which it is given. Friday's game was no different, as Ball State gave up three errors plus another five free bases that opened the door for four unearned runs to score.Â
UP NEXT: Chayce McDermott will go for Ball State in Saturday's first game, which will begin at 1 p.m. McDermott defeated Central Michigan in 2019, a 10-0 BSU win in which he was named MAC Pitcher of the Week. Lukas Jaksich, Ball State's ERA leader, will take the ball in the nightcap.Â
