Final round set for Wednesday at The Sagamore Club
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The weather was better and so were the scores Tuesday at the NCAA Noblesville Regional hosted by Ball State and the Hamilton County Sports Authority.
Â
After just three rounds in the 60s in the opening round, there were 11 of them in round two at The Sagamore Club. Monday's rain gave way to sunnier skies Tuesday.
Â
No. 1 seed Texas counted four under-par rounds, led by Cole Hammer's bogey-free 68, to stretch its lead. The Longhorns will enter Wednesday's final round with a seven-shot advantage at 15 under par.
Â
The rest of the top five seeds are also among the top five on the leaderboard and in position to qualify for the national championships. Tennessee (-8) is second, followed by North Carolina (-7), Louisville (-6) and North Florida (-3).
Â
UNCW, behind a nine-birdie round from Blake McShea, maintained sixth place. The Seahawks are nine shots out of the fifth and final advancing spot.
Â
McShea's round of 66 moved him into a tie at the top of the leaderboard with North Florida's Nick Infanti who shot 69. That pair sits at 6 under par, one shot clear of Hammer.
Â
The rounds of the day belonged to West Virginia's Mark Goetz and Arkansas State's Zan Luka Stirn who both carded 6-under 66. Goetz jumped 29 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth place at 4 under, while Stirn vaulted 46 spots into the top 15.
Â
Among players from teams in the state of Indiana, Purdue's Cole Bradley (-3) and Joe Weiler (-2), competing as individuals, are both in the top 10.
Â
The third and final round will be played Wednesday with a split tee start. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. off the first tee.
Â
The top five teams at the end of Wednesday's round plus the top individual not associated with one of those teams will advance to the national championships later this month at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
