May 18, 2021 | Softball
CLEVELAND - - After a record-breaking week, Ball State softball senior closer Alyssa Rothwell will end her career as the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Â
A three-time career honoree, Rothwell earns the award after becoming the greatest closer in NCAA Division I softball history with her record-setting 33rd career save in last Friday's 6-3 victory at Buffalo.Â
Â
In one of her most impressive performances of the season, Rothwell struck out five of the seven batters she faced over the 2.0 inning save, including getting the final batter of the game looking.
Â
However, it was just one of four solid appearances for Rothwell who finished the week with a 1.62 ERA, a 2-0 record and one save. In all, she struck out 16 batters over her 8.2 innings of work (nearly two an inning), while allowing just three hits and a pair of runs. In fact, she held opposing batters to a minuscule .103 average over her four appearances.
Â
Rothwell finished her Ball State career ranked seventh in program history with 329 career strikeouts. However, the total came over just 297.2 innings of work, allowing her to rank first on BSU's career charts with a 7.74 strikeouts/seven-inning game average. She also holds the second-lowest opponent batting average among Ball State's all-time pitchers, at .193, while her 28 career wins are 14th and her 2.30 career ERA is 16th.
