Bounce-Back Afternoon Steadies Men’s Golf on Tough Scoring Day at Pfau
April 03, 2021 | Men's Golf
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team tied for the most birdies of any team in the field Saturday, but some big numbers on a tough golf course left the Cardinals looking up the leaderboard after the 36-hole day at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational.
Scores were high, especially in the first round, in the collegiate tournament debut of Indiana's new Pfau Course. Ball State bounced back from the worst score in the morning round to post the fourth-best score of the afternoon round.
The Cardinals finished the day with a 36-hole total of 611 (+43). They are in ninth place but just six shots out of fourth with one round left to play. Michigan State (+19) holds a 10-shot lead over second-place Indiana.
Joey Ranieri and Sterling McIlravy are the top BSU players on the leaderboard in a tie for 19th place at 10 over par, while CJ Jones is one stroke behind them. Only one player – Michigan State's James Piot at even-par – is better than 4 over.
Ranieri, McIlravy and Jack Cunningham all made five birdies on the day to tie for the second-most of any individual player.
The third and final round at the Pfau Course will be played Sunday.
