Cardinals Rout NIU To Earn Series Sweep
April 25, 2021 | Baseball
MUNCIE - Two explosions is all it took. The Ball State baseball team scored four runs in the 1st and seven runs in the 5th to win 11-1 Sunday in a blowout over Northern Illinois. The win was BSU's fifth straight and finished a four-game sweep.Â
1st ROUND KNOCKOUT: The bottom of the 1st inning resembled a boxing match where the opponent was overwhelmed. Ball State's first five batters all got a hit, highlighted by a double off the wall in right-center by Ryan Peltier. The score was 4-0 quickly, and that's all starter Trennor O'Donnell would need.
O'DONNELL RULES: For the second Sunday in a row, O'Donnell gave a strong start for BSU. After a quality outing last week at Eastern Michigan, the 6-7 righty worked 5.1 shutout innings while allowing just three hits. O'Donnell has not allowed an earned run through 13.2 innings this season.Â
CARDS ROLL A 7: The 7-run outburst in the bottom of the 5th put the game away. Noah Navarro led off the inning with a double and the first six batters of the inning reached. Peltier and Nick Powell each had RBI singles, Aaron Simpson drove in a run and Adam Tellier showed a good piece of hitting lifting an outside pitch to the gap for a 2-run single. Twelve batters went to the plate in the inning, with Ross Messina walking and hitting an RBI single.
AYRES GOT A-ROD OUT: Mac Ayres got the final outs of the game, including the last one against Alex Rodriguez. Ayres got A-Rod to ground out to 3rd base to end the game.Â
BIG PICTURE LOOK AHEAD: BSU's sweep kept pace with Central Michigan atop the league standings. CMU got to play Akron this weekend, and with both teams going 4-0 it's a tie at the top. Both B SU and CMU are 16-4 and will play May 7-9 at CMU. Ball State is at Bowling Green next weekend.Â
