Track Championship Tuneup At Miami This Weekend

The Ball State track & field team is ready for its championship tuneup this weekend. The Cardinals will take a distance-heavy group to Miami this weekend to compete in the same facility where the championship will be in early May.

"It's always good for everybody to be in the facility and get comfortable," head coach Brian Etelman said. "It's a sort of conference preview with other conference teams there and for many it's a conclusion of the regular season. It's a good thing to see these teams one more time head-to-head. Going by times and marks is good, but it's really great to line up and compete one more time head-to-head."

Saturday's conditions, Etelman noted, should be excellent for good distance running. Elka Machan (4:34.57) is the event's top seed in the 1500m. Kayla Jones (2:13.49) and Kylee Mastin (2:13.52) are among the top pack in the 800m. Emmalyne Tarsa will run the 5K and the Cards have three entries in the steeplechase. In the speed events, BSU will have Aaleiah Winford and Jenelle Rogers in the sprints and hurdles.

Miami, Ohio, Toledo, Ohio and Kent State will have athletes competing to create that pre-championship competitive atmosphere. Dayton, Northern Kentucky, Belmont, Wright State and IUPUI will also have entries competing. As many teams work to get in their last bits of training and competition, many teams have athletes competing in multiple events this weekend.

The MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held May 7-8 at Miami.
