Men’s Tennis Comeback Cut Short At WMU
April 16, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Cardinals comeback today at Western Michigan was cut short losing to the Broncos by a score of 4-3 at Sorensen Courts.
As always when these two Mid-American Conference teams collide the outcome could go either way. Ball State (15-4, 4-3 MAC) had been on a five-match win streak prior to today's set back at No. 46 Western Michigan (19-1, 7-0 MAC).
Today the roles were reversed in doubles play as Ball State had taking the point from the Broncos in their first meeting on March 12 in Muncie, but this time Western Michigan came out on top after posting wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions, respectively.
Moving to singles, WMU pushed its advantage to 3-0 after taking courts one and six from the Cardinals.
After that, junior Danilo Kovacevic would earn a straight set (6-4, 6-2) defeat at the No. 2 slot over WMU's Peter Kuszynski. Sajin Smith followed Kovacevic's winning ways to make the score 3-2 after posting a 7-6, 6-1 decision versus the Broncos No. 4 singles player Jackson Boone.
With the wins, both Kovacevic and Smith improved to 6-1 in the league action.
But unfortunately, the Broncos Arjun Honnappa sealed WMU's fate after defeating BSU's Eli Herran in a close 7-6, 7-6 competition on court five for match point.
Senior Chris Adams ended the Cardinals day on a high note with his three -set thriller (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) over Fynn Lohse at slot No. 3.
The Ball State men's tennis team ends its three-game MAC road stretch when it plays at Northern Illinois Sunday at 3 p.m. ET at DeKalb High School.
