MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team closes out its six-game home stand this weekend with games Friday and Saturday against Bellarmine at the Briner Sports Complex. Both games will start at 1 p.m.
The two teams have only met twice with the Cardinals leading the all-time series, 2-0. Both meetings have been in Muncie – a 3-0 BSU victory on Oct. 10, 2012 and a 7-1 Cardinals win on Oct. 11, 2015. Bellarmine is slated to join the MAC in field hockey next season.
The Cardinals will welcome back alumna Devanny Kuhn Boisvert who has been the head coach at Bellarmine since 2019. She started 76 games for Ball State from 2008-11, tallying 29 goals and 11 assists for a total of 69 points. Kuhn Boisvert led the Cardinals with a career-high 15 goals as a junior in 2010. She was a three-time All-MAC selection, earning first-team honors in each of her final two seasons. She was also an Academic All-MAC honoree.Â
Ball State (3-5) split last weekend's MAC series against Longwood, falling on March 26 by a score of 3-0 before rebounding on March 27 with a 1-0 shutout. The Cardinals' efforts did not go unnoticed as Ball State earned its second straight MAC Defensive Player of the Week honor with sophomore Wietske Overdijkink earning the recognition after turning away 13 shots over the course of the two matches against the Lancers. She faced six corners over the course of the weekend and anchored a defensive unit that allowed only one goal in those attempts. She currently leads the league with a .810 save percentage.Â
The Knights enter this weekend's competition with a 0-6 overall mark. Bellarmine has not played since March 20 against Kent State, a 7-0 setback.Â
Ball State returns to MAC play next week when it travels to Kent State – alma mater of third-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal – for games against the Golden Flashes on April 9 and 10 at 1 p.m. Currently, the Cardinals sit in third place in the MAC standings with a league record of 3-3.Â
