Tale of Two Nines Monday for Men’s Golf in Big D

DALLAS -- The Ball State men's golf team climbed to the middle of the leaderboard with a strong opening nine holes Monday but fell back with a tough second nine on the front side of Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The Cardinals' team score of 302 was two strokes better than their opening round but left them staring up at the field with one day left at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Joey Ranieri and Jack Cunningham again led the way for Ball State, Ranieri with a second straight 74 and Cunningham with a 75. Tyler Green carded a 76 and Yianni Kostouros a 77 for the team's other counting scores.
Ranieri was the only Cardinal to post a better score on the front side than the back Monday, coming home in 1 under over his final nine holes to climb into a tie for 29th as the top BSU player on the leaderboard. Cunningham is just one shot behind him in a tie for 32nd.
Tournament host and 13th-ranked SMU stretched its lead to 17 and is the only team in red figures at 4 under par. The Mustangs are one of four top-40 teams in the field. SMU's Noah Goodwin continues to lead individually at 4 under.
The final round will be played Tuesday. The Cardinals are again slated to go off the 10th tee at 10 a.m. CT (11 ET).
