Mix of Birdies, Big Numbers in Opening Round at Trinity Forest
March 07, 2021 | Men's Golf
DALLAS -- Jack Cunningham and Joey Ranieri led the Ball State men's golf team with rounds of 3-over-par 74 in Sunday's opening round at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Â
Cunningham made five birdies on the day to tie for the most of any player in the field. Were it not for consecutive sevens in the middle of the back nine, he would be among the leaders at Trinity Golf Club.
Â
There were too many big numbers as a whole for the Cardinals in Sunday's 304, leaving them well back of the lead after their first stroke-play round of the season. Still, BSU is only six strokes behind a pair of top-40 teams – TCU and Louisville – and can make a move with a good second round Monday.
Â
Tournament host and 13th-ranked SMU opened with a round of 284 and holds a two-stroke lead over the second-highest rated team in the field, No. 18 North Texas. SMU's Noah Goodwin holds the individual lead at 4 under after a 67.
Â
Ball State's tee times for the second round begin Monday at 10 a.m. on the 10th tee. The final round will be played Tuesday. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
